Thanks to rapid advances in artificial intelligence, this is no longer science fiction, but the reality of today’s internet – and the next frontier of online reputational risk.

“Vibe coding” is changing the development game, making it possible for anyone to conjure up convincing websites, apps and online content, using loose, descriptive prompts. Scammers have been quick to exploit these tools, whether to discredit a brand, defraud unsuspecting users, or access sensitive personal information.

Last year, more than 580 new AI-generated websites appeared every day, worldwide, according to research from Norton. They discovered, among others, fake Coinbase logins, Microsoft 365 portals and DHL delivery pages – all near-identical to their legitimate counterparts, and all created with AI.

For major brands, this is an emerging reputation threat.

What is “vibe coding” and how is it being powered by AI?

Vibe coding involves creating digital products – such as software, websites, or apps - from loose, high‑level prompts. These are requests based on tone or aesthetic direction, rather than detailed specifications. Commercially available large language models (such as Claude, ChatGPT and CoPilot) then interpret these prompts, producing functional code in any development language.

A prompt such as “build a sitethat looks like a premium British retail bank’s customer login page” can now produce a sophisticated, brand‑consistent webpage complete with mock navigation, and a branded colour palette, which behaves exactly as unsuspecting users think it should.

Crucially, vibe coding requiresno technical expertise and often involves little to no review of the output - unlike traditional AI-assisted coding – and the user simply accepts AI-produced code as-is.

Ease and speed: creating deceptivebrand‑imitation sites

While the accessibility of AI‑enabledvibe coding enables quicker production for legitimate developers - it has also radically lowered the technical barrier to creating apps, emails and websites intended to deceive, threatening reputational integrity.

These capabilities can be used to set up fraudulent customer‑support portals, lookalike corporate microsites, or fake campaign pages. These may appear polished enough that customers, investors, or journalists encounter them before finding the legitimate version. Even a short‑lived imitation site can force a brand into explaining, clarifying, and reassuring stakeholders, creating reputational damage even when no breach has occurred.

The credibility of imitation sites is further strengthened by AI‑generated text. Modern language models can closely mimic corporate tone, senior‑leadership voice, or organisational style using only minimal cues.

A false announcement about a data breach, strategic shift, or leadership resignation can propagate rapidly, prompting real‑world concern before the organisation is even aware of the impersonation. Even after correction, the brand may face lingering doubts, as stakeholders struggle to shake off their initial misgivings.

Individuals, such as executives, public figures, and subject‑matter experts, face similar exposure. A malicious actor might deploy fake headshots, embellished biographies, or fraudulent fundraising pages that appear genuinely affiliated with the individual.
