Sir James Dyson and Lady Deirdre Dyson: Statement in Open Court
10 December 2020
On 10th December 2020, Rachel Atkins, Partner at Schillings, read a Statement in Open Court (SIOC) on behalf of Sir James Dyson and Lady Deirdre Dyson, following their successful libel claim against Associated Newspapers Limited in respect of articles published in July 2019, which the Mail admitted were false and defamatory. You can read the full Statement in Open Court here.
The SIOC states that Sir James Dyson and Lady Deirdre Dyson’s case was not motivated by money and the compensation paid to them by Associated Newspapers Limited will be donated to Cure EB, a charity funding research into a cure for and treatment of the debilitating skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa. The Claimants will match the donation with a further £100,000 of their own.
The SIOC concludes The Daily Mail has protracted the process, but it has finally admitted the articles it wrote were false and damaging. The Claimants had little option but to accept the Offer of Amends even though the Daily Mail’s apology which followed was wholly inadequate in their view. You can read the the Daily Mail’s correction here.
